My Memory of June 3, 1989
"Please remember June the Third, 1989. The most tragic event happened in the Chinese Capital, Beijing. Thousands of people, most of them innocent civilians, were killed by fully-armed soldiers when they forced their way into city. Among the killed are our colleagues at Radio Beijing. The soldiers were riding on armored vehicles and used machine guns against thousands of local residents and students who tried to block their way. When the army conveys made the breakthrough, soldiers continued to spray their bullets indiscriminately at crowds in the street. Eyewitnesses say some armored vehicles even crushed foot soldiers who hesitated in front of the resisting civilians. Radio Beijing English Department deeply mourns those who died in the tragic incident and appeals to all its listeners to join our protest for the gross violation of human rights and the most barbarous suppression of the people."
"Because of the abnormal situation here in Beijing there is no other news we could bring you. We sincerely ask for your understanding and thank you for joining us at this most tragic moment."
Although I was in #Beijing when the #TiananmenSquareMassacre happened, I didn't hear the above broadcast at that time. Later, I heard about it but didn't listen to the complete version. Today is the first time I've listened to the full broadcast, and it has deeply touched me. So, I wanted to share it.
This is a broadcast that will forever be recorded in history. It was broadcasted to the world by #RadioBeijing on June 4, 1989, at 6:25 a.m., exposing the massacre by the #CCP's military. The author of the broadcast script is Wu Xiaoyong. He is the son of Wu Xueqian, China's former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice Premier at the time. Wu Xiaoyong was arrested for this, and in a later interview, he expressed no regrets about his action.
By the way, people in #Beijing thought #TiananmenMasscre happened on June 3 at that time, as clashes between the students( & civilians) and #PLA soldiers in Beijing started in the afternoon on June 3, and soldiers were already "clearing up" Tiananmen Square in the night of June 3. The mass killing might only start in the early morning of June 4. So later this event was called the June 4th Event in 1989.
I remember I was at #Peking University on June 3, 1989. I don't know why I didn't go out on that day. I went to #TiananmenSquare a lot during the movement. But that day I didn't go. I heard that there were clashes in the city, and some roads were blocked, etc. I was very worried as two of my closest friends had gone out.
Later one of them told me he was at Muxidi when the soldiers started shooting. One bullet pierced through the casing of his bicycle chain (later I saw the bullet hole), and a person fell beside him. He called for a taxi to take him to the hospital, but by the time the taxi arrived at the hospital, the person had died in his arms. His white shirt was stained with the fresh blood left by that person, and I also saw his blood-soaked shirt with my own eyes.
Another friend was at #Tiananmen Square at the time. When she heard gunshots, she ran together with the crowd into nearby alleys. While running, she sometimes heard a burst of intense gunfire, and everyone quickly crouched down. After the gunshots subsided, they stood up and continued running. But each time, there were people who never stood up again. She ran back to the campus in the early morning of June 4th.
A few days later, the two friends and I found a way to take a train to escape from Beijing. The train station was chaotic, resembling the end of the world.
