True Story: That Year, In China, Rumor Outran the "Truth/Official News"
In 1976, I was not yet ten years old. One day, a classmate whispered to me, "Jiang Qing is a counter-revolutionary!"
I was terrified. Jiang Qing was clearly the wife, and close companion of our great leader, Chairman Mao. How could she possibly be a counter-revolutionary?
My heart pounded with fear, and I didn’t dare tell anyone what I had heard, not even my parents or my best friend.
A little over a month later, the "Gang of Four", with Mao's wife Jiang Qing as a key member, really did fall...
Looking back, that classmate likely overheard something her parents had said, but she couldn’t recall all the details of the rumor. She only remembered Jiang Qing's name, which she was familiar with, and the simple label "counter-revolutionary."
And her parents? Naturally, they must have heard it through some other means.
At that time, I was in Hanwang Town, Mianzhu County, Sichuan Province—a small place with a population of less than 30,000. My father had been persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and was sent from Mianyang City to undergo "reeducation" there.
In such a remote place, 1,800 kilometers (about 1,118 miles) away from Beijing, this political rumor reached the ears of a primary school student like me with such accuracy. I was so frightened that I didn’t dare tell anyone…
Among the many coups in the history of the Chinese Communist Party, the "Smashing of the Gang of Four" was the only successful one.
At a time when rumors abound, will there be a second one?
