Exclusive: The Ordeal of Fang Bin and His Family

Exclusive: The Ordeal of Fang Bin and His Family

Article: Li Dayong (pseudonym)

My name is Li Dayong (pseudonym), I am 61 years old this year. I was born in Ezhou City, Hubei Province, China. In 1987, while I was a graduate student at Xi'an Highway College (now Chang'an University), Fang Bin was my classmate.

Fang Bin (方斌) was also born in Hubei Province, and he is from Wuhan City. Since we were both from Hubei and classmates, we had very close interactions. From 1997 to the present, we have maintained close contact, and I am very familiar with everything he has experienced.

In January 1996, Fang Bin began practicing Falun Gong in Beijing, and his wife, Feng Yunqing (馮蘊青), also started practicing with him in 1998. Through practicing Falun Gong, Fang Bin changed many of his bad habits and his health improved significantly. Through practicing Falun Gong, Fang Bin's mind and body were elevated, and his family became more harmonious. Therefore, Fang Bin and his wife had complete faith in Falun Gong.

However, starting from July 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began to suppress and persecute Falun Gong comprehensively. The CCP did not allow Falun Gong practitioners to practice in public, nor did it allow them to have any Falun Gong materials at home. They were also not allowed to promote or introduce Falun Gong to others, otherwise, they would face severe suppression from the CCP.

In response to the CCP's unreasonable persecution of Falun Gong, Fang Bin and his wife stood up to defend Falun Gong right away. From July 19 to July 22, 1999, Fang Bin and his wife got up very early every day and went to Tiananmen Square and nearby Zhongnanhai, where the CCP government was located, to report the situation of Falun Gong to relevant CCP departments and to clarify the truth that Falun Gong is good, and that the CCP government should not suppress Falun Gong unreasonably.

However, every time, the CCP government did not listen to what Falun Gong practitioners had to say. Every day, they brought in a large number of buses and forcibly took the Falun Gong practitioners who went to report the situation to various places in Beijing like sports stadiums.

Fang Bin and Feng Yunqing were taken to the Chaoyang Sports Stadium in Beijing during those days. They were captured in the morning and released in the evening, for four consecutive days, until July 22, 1999, when the CCP used all media in China to viciously attack, frame, slander, and defame Falun Gong.

By July 24, 1999, the CCP had fully controlled the area around Tiananmen Square, preventing any suspected Falun Gong practitioners from entering Tiananmen Square and the vicinity of Zhongnanhai. At the same time, the CCP government fully controlled the area around Beijing, preventing any outsiders suspected of being Falun Gong practitioners from entering Beijing.

The CCP set up security checks at all entrances to Beijing, placing a photo of Mr. Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, on the ground, asking passersby to step on it. Those who refused were identified as Falun Gong practitioners and were immediately arrested and sent back, to be detained by their respective local CCP governments.

In mid-August 1999, Fang Bin's wife went to Tiananmen Square. When she was talking to tourists about the truth of the CCP's unreasonable suppression of Falun Gong, suddenly a group of police officers came and arrested her without any explanation. She was then illegally detained in the Miyun Detention Center in Beijing for 15 days of administrative detention.

During this time, Fang Bin had to take care of their four-year-old son, Fang Liang, by himself for these 15 days without his wife.

Since the CCP started a massive propaganda campaign against Falun Gong in all media outlets from July 1999, almost all uninformed Chinese citizens were brainwashed by the CCP into thinking that Falun Gong is bad just because the CCP said so.

Because the Chinese public had no other news channels to know the truth about Falun Gong, they only heard the CCP's one-sided propaganda and brainwashing. Many people hated Falun Gong at that time.

In mid-December 1999, Fang Bin's neighbor reported that there were pictures of Falun Gong's Master in Fang's house. The police from the Chaoyang branch of the Beijing Public Security Bureau barged into Fang Bin's home, forcibly removed all the portraits, and even threatened the landlord not to allow Fang Bin's family to live in their home in Xingfu Second Village on Chunxiu Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing.

Consequently, Fang Bin and his family of three had to move out and temporarily found another place to live for over a month.

In late December 2000, Fang Bin was arrested by the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau in Beijing for hosting Falun Gong practitioners from other regions who came to Beijing to petition. He was charged with the so-called "crime of using a heretical religious organization to obstruct the implementation of the law" and was illegally sentenced to two years and six months of re-education through labor.

In March 2001, Fang Bin’s wife Feng Yunqing was arrested merely for distributing Falun Gong materials to fellow practitioners. She was taken by the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau in Beijing and sentenced to one and a half years of re-education through labor.

After Feng Yunqing's arrest, their son, who was only five and a half years old, lived alone in the kindergarten, not knowing where his parents had suddenly gone and why they hadn't come to pick him up as usual.

It was not until seven days later that the kindergarten authorities contacted Feng Yunqing's mother, and Fang Liang was handed over to his grandmother.

In March 2003, just a year after Feng Yunqing's release, she was reported for encouraging fellow practitioners she met in the labor camp to continue practicing Falun Gong and not fear the CCP's suppression. As a result, she was arrested again by the Chaoyang Public Security Bureau in Beijing and sentenced to another two years of re-education through labor.

On the day of Feng Yunqing's arrest, Fang Bin was on a business trip in Guangzhou, and their seven-and-a-half-year-old son Fang Liang witnessed this terrifying scene. He desperately blocked the door, not allowing the police to enter, crying, shouting, and pleading for them not to take his mother away. At such a young age, he had already witnessed his parents being taken away from him multiple times, leaving deep scars on his young mind.

Just less than half a year after being reunited with his parents, he was sent to live with his grandmother again.

In May 2004, Fang Bin was again arrested for visiting a company run by a Falun Gong practitioner. He was “re-educated” through labor for another two and a half years.

In May 2007, Feng Yunqing was arrested for distributing Falun Gong materials in a neighborhood in Beijing and was sentenced to two years of re-education through labor.

In August 2008, while working on a highway project in Wuhan, Fang Bin was arrested again for planning to attend a class reunion in Beijing during the Olympic Games. The “610 Office” in Wuhan, specifically tasked with persecuting Falun Gong, used the Olympics as an excuse to detain Fang Bin in a black jail for 30 days.

In December 2008, Fang Bin was arrested for helping a university intern at his construction site to withdraw from the Chinese Communist Party. He was detained for 15 days.

From July 2012 to May 2013, Fang Bin opened a restaurant called "Chu-Han Restaurant" in Wuhan to help human rights activists petition and to facilitate activities among Wuhan citizens and democrats. He helped petitioners write complaints, published articles overseas about their tragic experiences, and called on people worldwide to pay attention to the persecution of ordinary Chinese citizens by the CCP.

Fang Bin also led local petitioners in Wuhan to rescue individuals illegally detained in black jails by the CCP. Consequently, he was detained in a black jail for 60 days by the Wuhan Public Security Bureau for illegally providing information to foreign media.

From 2009, Fang Bin, working on highway projects, stayed in Wuhan for extended periods. After Feng Yunqing was released from the labor camp, she frequently traveled between Beijing and Wuhan.

In May 2017, Feng Yunqing created videos in Wuhan on her computer to expose the truth about the CCP's persecution of Falun Gong, Christian house churches, rights activists, and dissidents. These videos were widely circulated in Chinese WeChat groups, catching the CCP's attention. When they identified Feng Yunqing as the main producer, she was arrested and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. She is currently imprisoned in the Hubei Provincial Women's Prison on Baofeng Road, Wuhan.

At the end of 2019, the COVID-19 virus emerged in Wuhan. Initially, the CCP covered up the outbreak, claiming that the virus was not transmissible between humans and not deadly.

From January 18, 2020, Fang Bin began visiting major hospitals in Wuhan to understand the situation with the COVID-19 outbreak. On January 30, he captured footage at Wuhan's Fifth People's Hospital, where eight bodies of COVID-19 victims were carried out within five minutes. He also recorded a patient who died in the outpatient department and the heart-wrenching scene of his son watching his father slowly pass away.

After Fang Bin uploaded these videos to the internet, they were widely shared and viewed around the world. When the CCP realized that Fang Bin had exposed the truth of the Wuhan epidemic, they sent police from the Hanyang branch of the Wuhan Public Security Bureau to his house, pretending to be epidemic prevention staff and demanding to take Fang Bin away for quarantine.

Fang Bin refused to open the door, asserting his legal rights against unauthorized entry into his home. However, the door was eventually opened during a struggle.

Fang Bin was pinned down by the police, and he recorded the entire arrest process. When he was taken to the Hanyang Sixin Police Station, he managed to send the video of his arrest to a WeChat group.

When the group members saw the live footage of Fang Bin's arrest, they quickly shared it, and the news of his arrest for reporting the true situation of the Wuhan epidemic spread worldwide, garnering extensive international attention and support.

Under public pressure, the CCP had to release Fang Bin at midnight on the same day.

Following his release, Fang Bin's situation caught the attention of global media. Major media outlets contacted him for telephone and video interviews, thanking him for bringing the truth to the world and admiring his courage.

Some media personnel even mentioned that Fang Bin's reporting on the Wuhan epidemic had the journalistic value to win the Pulitzer Prize. In any country (except North Korea), Fang Bin would be regarded as a national hero.

Instead of supporting Fang Bin's righteous actions, the CCP forcibly prevented him from accepting interviews with foreign media. On February 9, 2020, they forcibly entered Fang Bin's house, detained him, and sentenced him to three years in prison for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble."

After his release on April 30, 2023, Fang Bin followed the visiting regulations of the Hubei Women's Prison to visit his wife, who was still incarcerated. However, the prison authorities, citing Feng Yunqing's practice of Falun Gong, denied Fang Bin the visitation rights. While other inmates could normally meet with their relatives, Feng Yunqing, solely because she was a Falun Gong practitioner, was deprived of the opportunity to see her family.

Since the CCP began persecuting Falun Gong in July 1999, 24 years have passed, and the CCP still stubbornly persists in its policy of persecution. The rationale for this persecution is simply that there are too many people practicing Falun Gong. Additionally, Falun Gong's belief in the existence of gods and Buddhas does not align with the CCP's atheistic ideology. The CCP fears that a large number of people believing in gods could undermine its ideological brainwashing and shake its governing foundation.

As long as the CCP exists, it will continue to persecute genuine religious faiths. Under CCP rule, all religions in mainland China must endorse the leadership of the Communist Party, comply with the management and guidance of the State Administration for Religious Affairs, and conduct religious affairs under the direction of the CCP. No religion can operate independently of the Party's control.

Therefore, the CCP's persecution of religious beliefs is an assault on inherent human rights and universal human values. I hope all righteous individuals and groups around the world will stand up against the CCP's atrocities in persecuting religious beliefs, restore justice to the world, and vindicate humanity.
