For those who were surprised by or couldn't understand why Trump won the election, I'd like to share a post I shared with my Chinese language followers on October 28. To summarize it in one word: Misinformed. You've been fed the wrong information, or you've been watching the wrong media.
I came to the US in 2011. Before 2016, I had no idea who Donald Trump was. I only got an impression from the brief reports by some Chinese media: this was a rich playboy.
In 2016, when he ran for president and first proposed building a wall on the border, everyone thought he was "blasphemous" , as if the sky was falling. I thought to myself: every household has doors and locks, some even have security doors and protective railings, so why can't a country build a wall?
I remember it was April 2016, during the primaries, he held a rally in Southern California. I was working at the Chinese language division of New Tang Dynasty Television @NTDNews in LA at the time, and we sent a group of reporters to cover the event.
I didn't leave the station, but I saw all the mainstream media broadcasting live the protests outside, with only a hundred or so protesters, but the mainstream media had helicopters hovering above, broadcasting live footage of people jumping around on cars for hours.
Finally, when Trump started speaking, he spoke for over 40 minutes, but I turned it off after listening for 12 minutes.
That was the first time I heard him speak for himself. I turned it off not because I didn't want to listen, but quite the opposite, every sentence I heard in those 12 minutes made me nod in agreement—I agreed with everything he said.
However, I was busy preparing the news for the day. I was the news director and chief editor, and I had to review each story for the 30-minute broadcast.
Later, when our reporters returned, I watched the footage they took inside and the interviews they conducted. There were about 8000 people that day, all supporters. The interviewees spoke very positively about Trump and explained why they were there.
But if you only watched the mainstream media, you wouldn't see any of this; you would only see that Trump's arrival caused riots, with helicopters hovering for a long time just broadcasting images of people jumping around on cars.
What the people inside said, why they were there, they completely didn't broadcast.
So I decided later that our report would do the opposite of what other media did: We should use the positive interviews from inside, and just briefly mention the protests outside. That's a true presentation of the event: 8000 supporters vs only about 100 protesters.
A reporter asked: Wouldn't that go against the principles of balanced reporting?
I said, we are just a small Chinese TV station, even if we speak 100% positively about Trump, it wouldn't 'balance' all the negative things said by the major mainstream media, so let's help balance it out a bit.
