“Ten years ago I met Jennifer and she had just escaped China. She was writing her book and to be able to tell her story after so many years and get it out and to be acknowledged… this is about not just her story but also those inside China who are being suppressed, so this is for them.”
Jennifer Zeng, a subject of the film, said that given China’s role in the world, what happens inside it these days is everyone’s problem.
“I hope this film changes our world,” said Margaret Chew Barringer, a poet and filmmaker. The film festival is the latest initiative from American Insight, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting free speech founded by Barringer. “Free China” was screened to a full house in the Benjamin Franklin Hall.
