Imagine a place where the state persecutes people for their religious beliefs and goes as far as harvesting their organs to sell to the highest bidder.
Zeng shared her experience at the rally. She had been torn away from her young daughter and put into a labor camp. At school her daughter was brainwashed that her mother was a terrible person and eventually tried to persuade her to denounce her faith in Falun Gong.
And now “Free China,” made by Michael Perlman, who also made “Tibet: Beyond Fear,” may cause Americans hesitation about buying Homer Simpson slippers, SG footwear, and “made in China” stuffed rabbits, Christmas lights, scarves, hats, and hand-knit sweaters.
AUTHOR Jennifer Zeng, whose hands bled as she made products shipped to America while a prisoner of her Chinese government. Her book is now a documentary exposing cruelty inflicted on prison populations.
This timely film also sheds light on how anti-censorship internet technologies and a re-emergence of spirituality and traditional values are bringing about a new China, one that can be free from the legacy of the most brutal dictatorship in history.
“The film 'Freedom China' and the story of my life both are about the Chinese people struggling for freedom,” Ms. Zeng said. “Many Americans have told me that they take freedom for granted. But millions of people in the world still don't have freedom. ”
MP Neil Parish stated, "This film clearly depicts how Falun Gong is being persecuted by the Chinese regime in China. It also covers the issue of organ harvesting, which is just horrendous, and how thousands of innocent Chinese peoples' lives are being affected.”
Commenting on the issue of forced organ harvesting, one congressional staff member says: “It’s too tragic. The world is too silent on the subject… We should speak out more…”
The documentary exposes the connection between the U.S. jobless rate and China’s unfair trade practices and industrial policies, which are shown to be ultimately destructive as manufacturing outsourced on a large scale to China forced the closure of many factories throughout the U.S.
Through the personal accounts of Jennifer Zeng and Dr. Charles Lee, who were brutally persecuted by the Chinese government for practicing Falun Gong, the film documents the conditions in Chinese forced labor camps, the brutality used by the authoritarian state against tens of millions of Falun Gong practitioners, as well as efforts to stop the persecution.
And given Canada's increasing relations with China, debate is what this country needs.
