Praising the Murderer 「無知的」碩士及學者
This is clearly a very “awkward” photo of our dance team at Hanwang Middle School in Mianzhu County, Sichuan Province, China. The photographer wasn’t fast enough to capture us while we were dancing, so he asked us to hold our pose afterward so he could “make up” for what he missed. But he was still too slow. Some of us grew impatient and gave up holding the pose. Only three of us managed to stay in position, with two showing miserable expressions—including me, in the back row.
這張很「失敗」的照片是我上初中時照的。我們跳舞時攝影師動作太慢，來不及抓拍，跳完後就讓我們擺好姿式等著。可他還是太不專業了，半天了也還沒拍，所以有人不耐煩地站直了腰，不給他擺姿式了；剩下三個還在勉力支撐的，兩個已是痛苦滿面，其中一個是後面那排的我。
And what was the dance about? It was about praising the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for “liberating the slaves in Tibet.” We were dressed and posed as supposedly grateful Tibetans, expressing our gratitude to the CCP.
那這是個什麼舞蹈呢？顯而易見，我們跳的是西藏舞，歌頌並感謝共產黨讓「西藏農奴」翻了身。
For more than 30 years, all those songs glorifying the CCP were deeply engraved in my mind, simply because I had heard them far too many times. Like the song accompanying our dance—we had to listen to it repeatedly while practicing.
在多達三十多年裏，我們跳舞時用的那支歌頌共產黨「解放」西藏的伴歌，以及其他所有宣傳共產黨「偉、光、正」的歌，都深深的印在我腦海裏，不定什麼時候就自己跑出來了。尤其跳舞時的伴歌，因爲反覆聽、反覆練，攆都攆不走。
It wasn’t until 2001, when I was already 35 years old, that I realized how terribly wrong my understanding of Tibet had been. That year, I was invited to speak at a human rights forum in Melbourne on Human Rights Day about the persecution I had suffered in a Chinese labor camp for practicing Falun Gong. I had escaped China just a few months earlier.
直到2001年，已35歲「高齡」的我才第一次意識到，我關於西藏的認知是多麼的錯誤——而且是通過一個最尷尬的方式。
那是在當年人權日澳大利亞墨爾本的一次研討會上，我應邀去發表演講，講述自己因修煉法輪功在中共勞教所裏所遭受的非人折磨。
During the Q&A session, a woman asked me, “What do you know about the persecution in Tibet? Do they suffer similar abuses?”
I searched my mind for anything I knew about Tibet—and realized, in a moment of panic, that apart from the CCP’s claim that it had “liberated Tibetan slaves and brought them eternal happiness,” I knew nothing at all about what had really happened in Tibet.
As someone who had survived a labor camp, who had nearly been tortured to death, and who had witnessed the madness and overwhelming force of the CCP’s propaganda machine, I already knew that what the Party said about Tibet was likely untrue. But what was the truth?
到了演講後的提問環節，一名女士問我：「據您所知，西藏的情況怎樣？西藏人是否也遭受同樣的迫害？」
我迅速地在腦海中搜索自己關於西藏的知識，發現除了那首歌及中共歷史教科書中關於共產黨「解放」了西藏農奴的宣傳之外，竟然是一無所有。那時我才剛剛逃離中國幾個月，整天忙於寫書，也無暇上網看東西，所以除了在國內已經裝入腦袋的信息之外，其他什麼也沒有。
在剛剛經歷了勞教所的九死一生，見證了中共對法輪功鋪天蓋地的造謠攻勢之後，我那時當然已經能猜到中共告訴我的關於西藏的一切，可能都是錯的。可是對的是什麼？不知道。
I had to admit that it was one of the most embarrassing moments of my entire life. As someone who held a Master of Science degree from a top university—Peking University—I had thought I was well-educated, smart, and knowledgeable. But in that moment, with so many people eagerly gazing at me and waiting for an answer, I had to confess I was too ignorant to provide one.
那一刻真是尷尬啊。臺下那麼多雙眼睛熱切的望著我，等著我的回答，而我卻不得不滿面通紅地承認：我在此問題上一無所知。對於從北大研究生畢業的、自認爲很聰明、受教育程度很高的我來說，那真是被深深刺痛的一刻。
回去後我立刻狂上網找西藏的資料看，這才第一次了解到，天哪，中共在西藏殺了那麼多人！
Just a few days ago, I came across a post by a professor from the College of Staten Island at the City University of New York (CUNY). He shared that, as a scholar trained for eight years in international politics and having taught for three years in China, he only realized after arriving in the United States how little he actually knew about America’s sacrifices and contributions during World War II—especially in the Pacific theater—and the importance of the Battle of Iwo Jima. He too recalled feeling deeply embarrassed.
So, just how devastating is the damage that the CCP has done to China and the Chinese people? And how much effort will it take to undo that damage?
I would say, we still have a long, long way to go.
前兩天在網上看到紐約城市大學斯泰登學院（CUNY-College of Staten Island）一名教授的一個帖子，說他作爲已在中國接受國際政治系八年訓練並授課三年的學者，來到美國後才發現自己並不了解美國在二戰，尤其是太平洋戰爭中的犧牲和貢獻，以及硫磺島之戰的重要性，當時也是無比尷尬。
由此可見，中國對中國及中國人民的傷害到底有多深？從字典到教科書，從小學生的舞蹈到央視的春晚，一切的一切它都掌控著，按它的要求全套瞎編或造假，到後來，連人們的思維方式都跑不出它設計的路線了。只要它一按開關，你腦子裏出來的保證是它想要的東西。
所以，就算中共明天就倒臺，要清除它的流毒，還有很長的路要走吶。
