“For myself, China doesn’t buy our resources because we are nice guys. China doesn’t buy our resources because we say nice things about them. China buys our resources because we sell it to them at the right price from an international market,” Mr Shoebridge said, adding, “Nobody respects a supplicant.”
Zeng and Lee were arrested, illegally sentenced, sent to forced labor camps, and tortured. As their stories unfold, the movie unveils a side of China that the Chinese Communist Party has labored to keep covered up for decades.
Once a Communist party member and former political prisoner Jennifer Zeng talks about the documentary film , "Free China: The Courage to Believe", which displays the harsh reality she endured while imprisoned by the Chinese Government.
“I’m that lady who said ‘I won’t give up’,” Zembrzuski said, moved by Zeng’s determination.
“I had no idea there were more than 70 million Falun Gong practitioners in China before the crackdown. And almost no one I knew knew about it either,” Perlman said. “I thought that it was really important to get this into the mainstream consciousness, that this was a beautiful movement, a peaceful movement, that was being so oppressed.”
Australia-based Jennifer Zeng, who was in Ottawa to attend both screenings, described atrocities suffered by prisoners in Chinese labour camps.
The documentary Free China: The Courage to Believe is centered around two Falun Gong practitioners who have been imprisoned for their beliefs—Jennifer Zeng, a former communist party member, and Dr. Charles Lee, a Chinese-American businessman.
“Free China: The Courage to Believe,” a documentary film released in 2013 about the persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, is being broadcast into China by satellite for the first time as of Jan. 23.
