On The Way 陌上(調寄天淨沙)
Tune to Tian Jing Sha
By Yuan Xi from White Cloud Poetry Society | Version A | Translated by Translated by Jennifer Zeng and Damian Robin
Quick-change season, feels warm then low.
Chatterings, francolins*, the sun angled low.
Coming south, going north, post-road flow,
Meet as we go.
Night breeze—painted walls, screened window.
Version B | Translated by Jennifer Zeng and Gerard Traub
Another changing season, suddenly becoming warm or cold
As the sun sets amidst the chirping of Francolins
Upon the post road, people travel north and south
Some we meet on the way
Surrounded by the night breeze
Painted walls and screened windows.
*Francolins are terrestrial (though not flightless) birds; they feed on insects, vegetable matter and seeds.

乍寒乍暖時光,
鷓鴣聲裡斜陽,
驛路南來北往。
相逢陌上,
晚風油壁紗窗。
