I started teaching my daughter Chinese characters when she was one year old. Initially, everything was under control; as I chose what to teach her and what she learned. Usually, I taught her 3 characters per day. It was quite easy. Altogether the process only took about 10-15 minutes; and she always regarded this as another interesting game.

However, when she reached 2 years old; and started to pick up words and characters from unknown sources, things sometimes went out of control.

For example, one day I took her for a walk after dinner. And she suddenly exclaimed in great excitement, “Mom! An ant is galloping over toward us!”

—I could never figure out where she picked up the word “galloping”; and why she decided to connect it with an ant.
